Akureyri Backpackers will open a hostel in the old Hotel Akureyri, Hafnarstræti 98, next spring. Hafnarstræti 98 is fully owned by Saga Investment Bank and KEA, which have a made an
agreement with Akureyri Backpackers on restoring the house and rent it subseqently. It is estimated that the reconstruction of the building will cost about 160 million and construction will commence
in the coming weeks. The hostel will accommodate 102 guests and provide a range of services for travelers. The heart of the building will beat on the ground floor where a tourist information will be
operated, as well as in the cafe where visitors can sit down and observe the diverse society in Akureyri. The house was built in 1923 and has a history of accommodation facilities for tourists as it
was for a long period operated as a hotel named Hotel Akureyri. No operation has been in the house for several years, but the exterior of the building was protected in 2007.
